Strengthening Families is a globally recognised 14 week parenting programme which is an unique opportunity for both parents and young people to work together to improve their relationships. The Strengthening Families Programme (SFP) is evidence based family skills programme which delivers multiple benefits to vulnerable families and emphasises the critical role of families in prevention and reducing risk. Delivered over 14 sessions the parenting skills, children's life skills, and family life skills training program is specifically designed for high-risk families. Parents and children participate in SFP, both separately in the teen and parent sessions and together in the family sessions. The programme aims to promote a healthy parent and child relationship by improving communication, bonding, parental monitoring and rule setting. Over the 14 weeks, families will come together one night a week, a meal is provided for all families, as is childcare and transport for those requiring it. The main aims are as follows: 1. Improve Family Relations: o Improve Family communication o Improve Family bonding and cohesion o Increase Family organisation and planning o Decrease family conflict o Increase parent/child time together o Increase parent’s empathy toward child 2. Increase Parenting Skills: o Increase parent knowledge of parenting o Increase parenting self-esteem or efficacy o Increase positive attention and praise o Reduce physical punishment o Increase effective discipline o Decrease parenting stress o Decrease parent depression 3. Improve Child Compliance: o Increase child compliance o Increase child’s school bonding and attachment o Increase child’s school grades and performance o Decrease children’s overt aggression o Decrease child’s covert aggression o Decrease child’s hyperactivity o Decrease child’s shyness o Decrease child’s depression 4. Increase Children’s Social competencies: o Increase communication skills o Increase peer refusal skills o Increase recognition of feelings o Increase knowledge of Alcohol and Drugs o Increase coping skills for anger and criticism o Reduce future intentions and use of Alcohol and Drugs 5. Reduce or Prevent Alcohol and Drug use: o Decrease parents Alcohol and Drug use o Prevent child’s Alcohol and Drug use
